Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd daughter in their family. Her father was a carnival barker, died as a young girl, requiring her mother to provide for the family by being waitress or cleaning lady. Ruth lived in the tenement area of poverty in Boston, Massachusetts, where she went to school. She left school after two years, to go into acting. Her path did not come without challenges. When she was in New York, her first task was to pose stills in crime magazines. acting work she wanted eluded. Then, after a period as a hat-wearing club girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave the job she was working in. She was an usherette during the day and then appeared at the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first permanent acting gig. She took classes in drama in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
